Andrew Conley, Baritone, was born in Papua New Guinea, and grew up in New Zealand. He holds a degree in Philosophy and English.
A former student of Dame Malvina Major, in 2001 he won both the Auckland North Shore Aria and the Wellington Evening Post Aria competitions. He was the only male finalist in the Mobil Song Quest New Zealand in 2002 and a semi-finalist in the Sydney McDonald’s Aria. He is the recipient of several major New Zealand scholarships and received the Derek Butler Trust Award through the Royal College of Music, where he has studied since September 2003 with Margaret Kingsley. He has recently completed his final year at the Benjamin Britten International Opera School, Royal College of Music studying with Russel Smythe.
For the Benjamin Britten International Opera School, Andrew performed the roles of Junius The Rape of Lucretia, Guglielmo and Falke, Die Fledermaus. He was a semi finalist in the Kathleen Ferrier Awards 2006.
For New Zealand Opera, he has sung Guglielmo, Cosi fan tutte, Figaro, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Mityukha, Boris Godunov, L’Hotelier, Manon and and Dr Malatesta, Don Pasquale. Roles for Auckland Opera Factory include Boris, Cheryomuski (Shostakovic), Pluto, Orpheus in the Underworld, Mr Kofner, The Consul (Menotti), Ben, The Telephone (Menotti), and Slook, La Cambiale di Matrimonio (Rossini).
A member of the NBR NZ Opera Emerging Artist Programme in 2001 and 2002, he performed several principle roles, and understudied Count Almaviva in the Le Nozze di Figaro, and Zurga in Bizet’s Pearl Fishers, during the company’s national productions.
He has been a soloist with the New Zealand Festival, the London Mozart Players, Auckland Choral Society, the Hamilton Civic Choir, and Auckland’s Sky City Starlight Symphony. He has also been a member of Auckland’s Opera Factory since its inception, and has performed at Blenheim Palace with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.
Since leaving the Opera School he has performed the role of Fiorello, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Lorenzo, I Capuleti e I Montecchi and the role of Malchanceux and the cover of Mr Astley, The Gambler for Grange Park Opera and Pimlico Opera Tour.
Andrew has recently covered the role of Don Alfonso for Garsington Opera.
