Joana Thomé, Mezzo, was born in Brazil, and studied at the University of Rio de Janeiro, before entering the Guildhall School of Music and Drama to pursue her studies with Susan McCulloch and additionally with Paula Anglin. After graduating she gained a place on the Opera Course at the Guildhall which she completed in June 2004.
Joana’s operatic roles include Cherubino, Le Nozze di Figaro, Béatrice, Béatrice et Bénédict, the title role in Xerxes at Cheltenham Festival, Minerva, Il ritorno d’Ulisse, Messagiera, L’Orfeo (Brazil) and Nutrice and Bacco, Orfeo (Rossi) performed at St. John Smith’s Square. Scene performances include Dorabella, Cosí fan Tutte, Octavian Rosenkavalier, Sarah, Roberto Devereux and Rosina, Il Barbiere di Siviglia.
She has given concerts throughout Brazil, Spain and Britain, (St James Church (Piccadilly), The Purcell Room and The Wigmore Hall) and has also recorded for BBC radio 3 and in France. She was a finalist Gold Medal Competitor at the Barbican.
She has appeared in public master classes given by Graham Johnson, Dalton Baldwin, Sarah Walker and Martin Katz and completed her Master’s Degree in performance with distinction.
In her final year at college, Joana performed Cherubino, Le Nozze di Figaro (to critical acclaim) and Lucretia, Rape of Lucretia.
Other roles include Rosina, The Barber of Seville, and Yarico, Inckle and Yarico for Opera East and Dido, Dido, Massagiero, Orfeo and the cover of Orimeno, Erismena for English Touring Opera, Carmen in Clermont Ferrand, France, Proserpina, Orfeo in Brazil, covered the role of Mercedes for Valencia Opera, performed the role of Hänsel in Castellon, Spain and the role of 1st Nymph, Rusalka for Grange Park Opera.
She has recently perfromed the role of Rosina for Iford Arts Festival and Mercedes, Carmen at the Festival of Escorial, Madrid with Calixto Bieto.
