Summary Verena Gunz, mezzo, was born in Linz, Austria and studied at the University for Music and Drama, Vienna on the Opera Course including Lied and Oratorio with Robert Holl. She subsequently joined the International Opera Studio, Gent, Belgium.

Verena’s operatic roles include Dorabella, Così fan Tutte, the title role in Xerxes, Tisbe, La Cenerentola, Second Lady, Die Zauberflöte, Sandmännchen, Hänsel und Gretel, Ramiro, La Finta Giardiniera, Girl, Trouble in Tahiti, Dama, Macbeth (Verdi), Conception, L’Heure Espagnole, Varvara and Feklusa, Katya Kabanova for companies such as the Glyndebourne Tour, Theater an der Wien, Wiener Volksoper, Schlosstheater Schönbrunn (Vienna), Klangbogen Wien, Wiener Musikverein, Vlaamse Opera Gent (Belgium) and many other summer festivals.

She has sung in public masterclasses given by Paul Hamburger and Graham Johnson.

Verena performs regularly as a concert and church singer. Her repertoire includes many Mozart Masses, Haydn, Jubelmesse, Franz Xaver Brixi Mass, Mendelssohn Elijah, Bach Magnificat, Pergolesi, Stabat Mater amongst others.

She is a member of the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation and has sung with the RSO Wien (under Kirill Petrenko), Wiener Symphoniker (under Bertrand de Billy/Vladimir Fedosejev), the Flemish Radio Symphony Orchestra (under Pietro Rizzo), the LPO (under Robin Ticciati). In 2003, Verena was the mezzo soloist in the world premiere of Christian Kolonowitz’s Requiem composed for the Klangwolke in Linz, Austria which she also recorded.

Verena has recently covered Second Lady for the Glyndebourne Tour and performed the role of Hansel for the Glyndebourne Educational Tour. At the end of 2008, Verena was a finalist in the Ralph Well Prize for the Wagner Society.

Verena returns to Glyndebourne Festival for the 2009 season.
